10 Human Cannibalism in History
There are tales of human cannibalism in the history of mankind. The common reason for this is to sustain their need for food though most of us will find this reason unacceptable. These incidences of consuming another human being have occurred many times in history, believe it or not and we have provided you ten stories about this diabolic incidence.
The Donner Party of America
The story of the Donner’s Party happened when the group of 87 individuals travelled across America and was caught in harsh weather.
When rescue arrived, there were only 47 of them and during an interview, there were a few use of the word “cannibalism” though this was later removed from the report. When archeologists today exhumed the bodies, they found human teeth marks on the bones.
THE MURDER OF A CABIN BOY
The case that has occurred in 1884 is still being studied since it is a good example of a good legal defense on “necessity”.
The story goes that there are four sailors who had no access on food and water while stranded on the middle of the sea. Both Dudley and Stephens suggested that one should be sacrificed for the rest to survive. No one volunteered to be the sacrifice so they killed the comatose cabin boy and consumed him. Help came and they reasoned out that they had to kill another human for them to sustain their lives. Of course, the court found the reason to be superficial which is the reason why they were ordered to be hanged though the sentence was lowered when they found that the decision is a little too harsh.
CANNIBALISM AND THE HOLY CRUSADE
I can’t imagine how you can put the two words together in a sentence but there is enough evidence that there actually has been an incident of human cannibalism during the “holy” crusade.
Of course, those men couldn’t have survived the trip with all that they have so they surely ran out of food which is the reason why they ate the flesh of their vanquished opponents.
This may be a strategy that the crusaders used to convey their message to their opponents instead of just being a need that was needed to be filled. The arguments go how one can vanquish an opponent who has already had their fellow fighters on their body.
CHINA’S TANG DYNASTY
There is another group in the orient that have done cannibalism and it’s no other than the Chinese during the Tang dynasty. They have a unique reason, though, for consuming human flesh.
The villagers would kill corrupt officials and consume them out of revenge. There also have been accounts when criminals would have their hearts ripped out and a portion would be eaten by the official overseeing it.
THE FAMINE IN LENINGRAD
This account would show how extreme hunger can cause individuals to resort to human cannibalism. There was an instance that there was nothing to eat in Leningrad and the dead human corpse abound everywhere.
The only option left for those who lived in the city was to consume the dead to sustain their need. Police back then tried to suppress this by implementing rules against it. Children were not allowed to leave the house in fear that they might be murdered and consumed. There were even body parts in the street that indicates that they’ve been gnawed on.
CANNIBALISM IN JAPAN
The same thing happened in Japan though the soldiers didn’t consume human flesh out of a need but just to prove a point.
The victims were mostly prisoners of war who are stripped of their flesh. Some of the victims were ripped off their flesh even though they are still alive then hurled down a pit to die. They do this just to express their point to the world. Well, we do know that the only point that they were able to convey is that they are evil.
THE MANMADE FAMINE IN UKRAINE
During the year 1932, USSR would forcefully take whatever crops and food products that the Ukrainians have which is the reason why a famine struck the country. Most of the citizens died in hunger due to starvation.
However, there was also a report about cannibalism during the time since there was nothing to eat. This happened when a man killed his wife and made her flesh into soup. Another story goes that a family would eat their own young children in order to live. We know now how much we want to curse Joseph Stalin to his very face.
1959 CHINESE FAMINE
We commonly hear of cannibalistic stories about China today that they are widely spread across social media. Of course, most of them are not true though during Mao Zedong’s campaign of “Great Leap Forward” it is believed that this indeed happened.
Out of a long period of time without food, it is said that some individuals resorted to cannibalism. According to the book “Hungry Ghosts”, human flesh was sold in markets. Children were traded for others just to prevent their family from consuming their own children which may be a burden to their conscience.
THE RAID IN ST. FRANCIS
It is believe that the raid in the village of St. Francis in Canada was one of the most brutal raids in history. This occurred during the French and Indian War in 1759.
It is said that Robert Rogers and the rest of his group not only killed the villagers, ransacked their properties and scalped the prisoners they took. Stories say that out of hunger, the raiding party feasted on the flesh of the prisoners they’ve killed. They could hardly call themselves human beings after what they’ve done.
ANOTHER CRUSADE STORY IN MA’ARRA AND ANTIOCH
We have mentioned an account of the crusade earlier but there is another disturbing act during this crusade that led to cannibalism.
It is believed that during the siege, starving Christian troops would consume the buttocks of their opponents after frying them. There was even a story about Richard the Lionheart who ordered pork but was delivered human flesh. When he discovered this, he even got more of what was served. Well, some people are religious but are ungodly which makes others despise their belief.
