10 Planets that Hold Records
Centuries ago, man used to believe that the Earth is the center of the universe (and the reason why Galileo was excommunicated). However, recent studies of space revealed that this claim is flawed and we are just a speck in a universe with millions of other planets out there. Here we reveal the noted planets that were discovered over the years
KEPLER C-THE ROCKY PLANET
This plant was dubbed as “Mini Neptune” by astronomers who study the planet. This planet is 2.3 times the size of our planet but it has a mass 17 times more than the Earth. The planet is composed primarily by heavy rocks which explains the mass which is quite a deal since planets that belong mostly on that range of size are gas giants like those found in the Solar System.
GJ 1214b02-THE WETTEST PLANET
Another planet that is larger than the Earth and was discovered in 2009. It is believed that the planet is composed of nothing but water. However, unlike the water here on our planet, scientists believe that this planet has something more like a different kind of water since it has a different comparison. This is the reason why the water from this planet does not evaporate despite being near to its home star. Astronomers are looking forward to know more about the planet in 2018 when technology can produce better shots of it.
BD+20 1790b03- the Youngest Planet
We know for a fact that our planet was created 5.4 billion years ago which makes BD+20 1790b03
Far younger than Earth since it was formed only 35 million years ago. Due to the discovery of this planet, scientists are hoping to understand more about the development of planets. Compared to older plant, younger planets show stronger magnetic fields that creates solar flares and sun spots. Such intense magnetic field makes it difficult for scientist to know whether they are looking to a single planet or are there two planets out there.
Kapteyn B04-THE OLDEST PLANET
According to studies, this oldest planet could’ve supported life before due to the water formation found on it. Kapteyn B04 is said to have been created 2 billion years after the Big Bang and has another twin planet. It is easily observed from the Earth since the system that it belongs to is near our planet. Some theorist say that this planet must’ve been part of another galaxy that our very own Milky Way has absorbed and the rest of the galaxy where this planet belongs is now part of another galaxy where older planets are.
COROT-Exo-7b05- THE FASTEST PLANET
In our very own Solar System, the fastest planet that revolves around the solar system is Mercury which takes a total of 28 days to completely revolve around the sun. However, Corot-Exo-7b05 revolves around its host star in just a matter of 20 hours. It is also one of the hottest planets there is with its temperature ranging from 1,000 to 1,500 degrees Celsius and it has been known that the planet’s surface is made of Lava. Unlike other planets, this was discovered through transit method which allowed scientist to measure not only its mass but also the radius compared to the other method that can only measure the mass along.
OGLE-2005-BLG-390L B06-THE COLDEST PLANET
Among the coldest planets there is, OGLE-2005-BLG-390L B06 sure beats its competition with having an average temperature of -200 degrees Celsius. It belongs to the Milky Way galaxy and is described like the planet Hoth in one of the Star Wars sequel. Another record it holds is that it is the farthest exoplanet from our own world.
Kepler 70-B07-HOTTEST AND CLOSEST ORBIT TO ITS SUN
Kepler 70-B is considered the hottest planet there is since its temperature goes more than 7,000 degrees Celsius or 12, 500 oF and has the closest orbit from its sun. Another record this planet owns is the smallest exoplanet there is.
What fascinates most scientists is the sun that the planet revolves around. Normally, a star would explode when it becomes a red star but this wasn’t the case because this giant ball of hot gas simply returned to average size and pushed the rest of the giant planets that revolved around it by doing so.
According to astronomers, KOI-314c08 is the lightest alien planet there is relative to its mass and size. It is 60% larger than our earth due to its atmosphere that is composed mainly but both hydrogen and helium but the mass of this planet is just the same as Earth. There has been a hypothesis that the original atmosphere of this planet might’ve been larger if only its own sun didn’t boil its atmosphere.
TrES-2b09-THE DARKEST PLANET
TrES-2b09 is a star that is relatively near its sun but it is still the darkest planet that was ever discovered. The reason for this is because the planet only reflects less than 1% of light from its star compared to the darkest planet in our planet which is Mercury that reflects ten percent of light from our very own sun. This causes this planet to become less reflective than items that are considered black like coal. Scientists are still baffled what causes its atmosphere to be so dark and some speculate that this may be due to the large amount of sodium and titanium oxide taking the form of gas.
Fomalhaut B, The Zombie Planet10-WEIRDEST ORBIT
This planet was first considered to be a dust cloud but was later discovered to be a planet. The amazing discovery about this planet is that its orbit seems to be zigzagging and there’s no explanation available to why it orbits this way. The closest point of this planet is 7.5 billion kilometers while its farthest point is 45 billion kilometers. There are a few suggestions made about why the planet has this weird orbit and one of them is due to the fact that there might be another planet within the cloud of dust and ice surrounding the star.
